Faster Response Times
If paramedics suspect a patient is having a heart attack, they will traditionally perform an EKG in the field but without transmitting the tracing to the emergency room. Instead, patients are evaluated and triaged in the ED, and only then is the cath lab team called in to the hospital, sometimes more than an hour later.
With this new technology, emergency room physicians at Baptist Beaumont Hospital can review the EKG sent by an ambulance and, if the patient is having a heart attack, assemble the cardiac catheterization team before the ambulance arrives at the hospital. The patient is immediately transported to the cardiovascular cath lab where an interventional cardiologist opens the blocked coronary artery to restore blood flow to the heart.
