Restless Legs Syndrome Treatments
Ways to Improve Your Night’s Restful Sleep
Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a neurologic sleep disorder characterized by pain, itchiness, and other sensations when trying to fall asleep. This inability to fall asleep normally can cause a number of other health problems such as daytime drowsiness, decreased workplace productivity, and even weight loss. The Sleep Center at Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas brings together a team of sleep experts to help our patients obtain a more restful night’s sleep.
Ways to Manage RLS
While there is no known cure for RLS, there are some ways to mitigate the symptoms and bring your sleep schedule back onto a regular cycle.
Some treatment options include:
- Iron supplements – As those with iron deficiencies can experience RLS, you may wish to explore adding more iron to your diet in order to help manage symptoms
- Regular exercise – By releasing endorphins and oxytocin into your body and muscles, you may be able to reduce symptoms of RLS
- Avoid certain substances – Consider eliminating alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine from your diet altogether as these substance can interrupt sleep
Medication – Dopamine agonists can be used to help the brain to feel relaxed and reduce shakiness. Other sedatives such as benzodiazepines can help you relax and sleep better throughout the night. Ask a physician about other potential options for calming the muscles and getting a more restful sleep
